Is it alright to just put wire nuts on the end of unused or abandoned NM-cable or wiring?

If the wiring is still connected at the other end in the electric panel, it must be terminated in an electrical box. The National Electrical Code (NEC 300.12) states that “Raceways, cable armors, and cable sheaths shall be continuous between cabinets, boxes, fittings, or other enclosures or outlets.” When the wiring is disconnected at both ends, then it should be removed. We see this situation most often under a kitchen sink where a disposal has been taken out, like in the photo above.
