It is a sensor for a home security system that operates similarly to the sensor at windows, with an adjacent magnet aligned over it on the door. When the door opens and the magnet moves away from the sensor, it sends a signal the control panel. The photo below shows the garage door in the open position, looking up at the magnet that comes down over the sensor when the door is closed.
