Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) circuit breakers and receptacles
Monday, December 16, 2019
AFCI breakers were first required, but only in bedrooms, by the 1999 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC). An upgraded version, called a CAFCI for Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, became code in 2008, and the locations mandated have been expanded twice since then to include most 120-volt circuits in a home. Here’s links with answers to the questions we get about AFCI circuit protection:
• When did arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breakers first become required?
• How do I identify a combination AFCI (CAFCI) circuit breaker?
• What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI circuit breakers?
• What happens when you press the "TEST" button on a circuit breaker in an electric panel?
• What is a Dual Function Circuit Interrupter (DFCI)?
• Why do some breakers in my electric panel have a "TEST" button on them?
• Are arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breakers required in mobile/manufactured homes?
• What is the average life expectancy of an AFCI or CAFCI circuit breaker?
