The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year, and about 2,900 of those deaths occur among people who have never smoked. Other sources estimate the death rate as a range between 15,000 and 22,000.

    A lung cancer death cannot be certified by a pathologist as specifically caused by radon because there are no phyical markers specific to radon-induced lung cancer; plus, a number of other environmental factors, such as smoking or diesel exhaust fumes, that can contribute to developing it. The story of how these estimates came into being is somewhat convoluted: they evolved from studies of the elevated death rate from lung cancer of miners in uranium mines, many of whom were also heavy smokers, and other studies that compared the lung cancer death rate in homes with high radon to homes with lower radon.
