Why is some PVC pipe black?

The “black PVC” actually a different plastic pipe called ABS, which stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. ABS is only rated for drain piping within the home, and not for water supply. It can be interconnected with the white PVC with a slip fitting, or if a special glue is used that is rated for connecting the two types of material.
