How many receptacle outlets can go on a kitchen small appliance circuit?

The requirement for two 20-amp circuits serving "the small appliance load in kitchen, laundry, pantry, family room, dining room and breakfast room of dwelling occupancies” has been around since the 1959 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC), but there is no maximum number of receptacles per circuit specified. A refrigerator is allowed to be on one of the small appliance circuits (although it is usally provided with a separate dedicated circuit) but other installed appliances—such as the dishwasher, microwave, and disposal—are not.
