Who can perform a wind mitigation inspection in Florida?
Saturday, March 7, 2020
The following Florida-licensed construction professionals are allowed to perform a wind mitigation inspection, and must sign the form and list their type of license and license number:
•• Home Inspector - But only inspectors that have completed a training course approved by the Construction Industry Licensing Board and passes a proficiency exam.
•• Building Code Inspector - These are the inspectors that are licensed to work for a local building department.
•• General, Building, or Residential Contractor - These are the three levels of contractor licensing in Florida, and any one of them can do a wind mitigation inspection.
•• Professional Engineer
•• Professional Architect
•• Any inspector recognized by an insurer as having the necessary qualifications to do the inspection.
Unfortunately, homeowners cannot do their own wind mitigation inspections and Florida-licensed roofers are not on the list either. Many roofers, however, are also licensed in one of the approved categories and are able to complete the form anyway.
A wind mitigation inspection report is valid for 5 years from the date of the inspection, as long as there have been no significant structural changes to the home, then it must be redone to continue to receive the windstorm policy discounts.
