How many children drown each year in a pool or spa?
Friday, June 19, 2020
An average of 379 children younger than 15 years old drown in a pool or spa each year in America, according to recent Consumer Products Safety Council (CPSC) data. Children under 5 accounted for 75% of those deaths, and most drownings occurred in backyard pools when there are no adults around and no pool safety barrier.
So pool barriers are a big deal and the State of Florida requires them by law for all new pools. But we often find they have been removed or disabled by homeowners who consider the barriers annoying. To learn more about pool barrier requirements, go to our blog post What are the pool safety barrier requirements for Florida?
And, by the way, above-ground pools with a water depth of more than 24 inches are also required to comply with the Florida pool barrier law. For details, see Does an above-ground pool have to comply with code requirements for a swimming pool barrier?
