What is granular loss on a shingle roof?
Wednesday, April 21, 2021
The tiny bits of ground rock granules that cover the surface of an asphalt shingle roof add color and texture to a roof. But, more importantly, they protect the shingle material below from deterioration caused by the sun’s UV-rays. And, as the granules loosen and fall away over time, this accelerates the deterioration of the roof surface.
Observation of granule loss is also one way that an inspector can determine the approximate age of a roof. To learn more, go to our blog posts Why is granule loss a problem for an asphalt shingle roof? and Is it normal for a new shingle roof to lose granules?
