Here’s the standards of the International Residential Code for loft guards (IRC AQ104.2.5):
• Must be installed at the open sides of a loft.
• Not less than 36 inches in height or half of the clear height of the opening, whichever is less.
• Must comply with R312.1.3 and Table R301.5 of IRC for their construction.
